FLOWERS ON THE SILVER SCREEN (o)
I remember when I was young
how white hatted men carried faster guns.
The world was a movie I'd never seen,
as villains fell from the silver screen.
Old Roy and Dale never seemed to fail
to end their show with "Happy Trails".
Then the big kids grew their hair long.
and talked about the messages in songs.
I didn't understand what was going on
(I had no concept of Viet Nam).
I never knew that the six-o'clock news
was showing the beg kids being slewed.
I didn't know that their worries
were based on an unfair lottery.
When a cry for love rose up in the air,
They went to Woodstock to get their share.
All the rhetoric of anguish switched,
to demand love, peace, and music.
Then I remember the riots
at the establishment's disquiet.
I started rooting for the big kids side,
but had no notion just as to why.
And the the faster gun on the TV won,
because my side didn't carry one.
But today there are no flowers.
They all died when the war was over.
Now the big kids wear polyester suits,
and at nine and five- they all commute.
It seems so sad that the ideas they had
are now only considered a fad.
